Glide Gracefully in a Diagonal Movement is a solo presentation of work by London based artist Phil Frankland. In Frankland’s practice, personal narratives and visual art histories are constantly dug up, questioned, agonised over, copied, and regurgitated. Borrowing ideas from painting, printing and collage, works can exist as refined, stark statements of intent; on the flip side, they amass as muddled content, materially soiled. Employing these diverse aesthetic outcomes allows Frankland’s practice to develop as documentation of the artist as a constant maker and reflector.
Glide Gracefully in a Diagonal Movement brings together recent paintings and hanging felt collages. The paintings are accumulative, residual like a muddied studio floor. Painted exclusively on aluminium panels, they exist as petri dishes of activity and thought process, records of excavating and rebuilding. In contrast, the felt collages rely heavily on their pre-existing properties; manufactured colour, porosity, softness, ability to be cut and folded. Stitched, ripped and stained, these felt works relate to both the industrial and the domestic setting. Plush colour and tidy seams run through patches of muddy ink and fragments of printed matter.
