Established in 1997, Second Floor Studios & Arts (SFSA) has innovated within its sector to find bold ways to work with developers, landowners, funders, architects, and councils to deliver flagship, long-term projects for London and Kent. From 2016, SFSA's footprint has expanded to four sites, fostering creative communities of over 190 dedicated studio members, with the support from their 60 employees, apprentices, and interns. The studios house a diverse range of practitioners, including visual and fine artists, craft and designer makers, and other creative industries, creating sustainable spaces and contributing positively to the community. 80 new studios are due to open over 2024/5.
Some of SFSA's studio sites offer a blended solution, combining affordable artists' studios with creative industries space. This mix helps finance the projects, making them sustainable. SFSA aims to create spaces that foster creativity and community, contributing positively to the local environment. The creative industries (CI) accepted at SFSA include: Artificial Intelligence, Architecture, Advertising, Conservation and Restoration, Digital, Fashion (if they design but fabricate off-site), Film Production, Gaming & Visual Effects, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Landscape Design, Lighting Design (for concerts and stages), Photography (editorial, commercial), Product Design, Publishing & Graphics, Theatre Set Design, Urban Design. This diverse array of disciplines ensures a rich and collaborative environment for all members
