Studio Bursary

Supporting artists, designers and makers with affordable studio space

Second Floor Studios and Arts (SFSA) provides over 200 artists with outstanding studio space in four key locations in and around London. Including Deptford, Wembley Park, and Sevenoaks with two new sites launching in 2025.

Since 1997 Second Floor Studios & Arts have provided affordable studio space by maintaining a cost-efficient management and administration model to keep rental costs low for artists. To build on this we are launching a Studio Bursary, enabling funders to contribute directly to the cost of a studio space.

We invite you to play a crucial role in supporting the next generation of talented individuals by funding an artist, maker or designers’ studio space for a one- or two-year period. With over 200 artists in our studios, we can introduce you to an individual who is emerging or established; working nationally or internationally; or specialising in a particular discipline such as ceramics or glass.

A Studio Bursary Patron will gain an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the studios and a chance to meet-their funded artist. They will receive a letter of thanks from the funded artist/s. Supporters will receive an annual update about Second Floor Studios & Arts and be recognised for their support on the SFSA website. There will be an annual supporter’s brunch bringing funders together with our CEO and founder.

The cost for a 1-Year Studio Bursary can be £1,500, and a 2-Year Studio Artist Bursary is £3,000. Or a bespoke agreement can be set up for you and your patronage ambitions. Creating a diverse base of patrons, valued regardless of their financial contribution, aligns with SFSA’s ethos of community and collaboration. This approach also focuses on the shared goal of supporting art, emphasising fairness, equality and building a stronger, more inclusive creative arts community.

What is it like to have the support of a patron?

‘When I heard the news that I had been matched with a patron, who offered to support 50% of my studio rent for two years it was such a validation of my work, my ideas. I felt I could spend more time in my studio and work less to cross support my practice. The feeling that someone believes in me, so early in my career as an artist has been affirming.’ Recipient.

Janneke De Jong, Ceramics.

“As a ceramicist, it is almost impossible to find an affordable studio space in London - especially with a sink and a decent power supply. To work in a purpose-built studio like Deptford Foundry has made it possible to make a living as a maker. Because of the affordable rates, there is also more diversity in backgrounds and practice - and that breeds creativity.”
